Birmingham school students to meet The Prince of Wales

Students from ARK St Alban’s Academy in Birmingham will travel to the Royal Shakespeare Company’s Stratford-upon-Avon home to meet HRH The Prince of Wales, the RSC’s President, on Monday 2 June.

St. Alban’s Academy is the lead school in the Royal Shakespeare Theatre’s Learning and Performance Network which stretches throughout the country and involves over 400,000 students and their teachers.  As part of the visit, HRH will experience the work of the network and see how schools work with the RSC and their local theatre to create the best experience of Shakespeare in the classroom and in performance for young people.

Twelve schools, including St Alban’s Academy, will showcase a brief extract from their work on one of Shakespeare’s plays before students have the opportunity to meet HRH to talk about their experience of Shakespeare in the classroom.

St Alban’s Academy works closely with the Royal Shakespeare Company to widen access to - and participation in – Shakespeare’s works.  Previous events have included the company performing King Lear in the academy for the staff, students and local community, live feeds of David Tennant’s Richard II and a series of teacher training opportunities in active approaches to Shakespearean texts. Other ARK academies in Birmingham, including ARK Kings and ARK Tindal are also part of the network and benefit from access to the theatre’s expertise.

This three year project builds towards a festival which will take place in March 2015.
