Broadly our provision falls into three main categories, that all pupils from years 7-9 engage with: literary heritage, grammar/writing skills, reading for pleasure. These three pillars make up our core English provision and give pupils the opportunity to engage with a wide range of texts, while building foundational skills that will help them to excel at GCSE and beyond.

The KS4 curriculum prepares students to take four external exams at the end of Year 11: two for GCSE English Language and two for GCSE English Literature. These are graded 1-9 and the qualifications are 100% exam-based. In addition to this, students complete a Speaking and Listening assessment at the end of Year 10, and the grade they attain is recorded on their GCSE results certificate, although it does not contribute towards their GCSE grades.

The texts studied as part of the AQA course are: ‘Macbeth’, Power and Conflict poetry, unseen poetry, ‘An Inspector Calls’ and ‘Jekyll and Hyde’ for English Literature, as well as a wide range of fiction and non-fiction extracts for English Language.
