Studying RS is an opportunity to engage intellectually with the world in which we live. What dictates the decisions we make? Is there a God and can we prove His existence? Can God be transcendent and immanent? At St Alban’s we study different religions (with an emphasis on Christianity and Islam) and the diversity of views within them, as well as non-religious views which can include philosophical and ethical perspectives. As a result, students are expected to engage with religious holy texts as well as study the lives of leading religious figures. How do these teachings impact religious believers? Might they be difficult to follow? Students must formulate articulate points of views intellectually and empathetically, with a focus on reasoning by supporting their views with evidence or examples. Thus developing their literacy skills. With an emphasis on presenting diversity within religions and communities, RE at St Alban’s aims to help students understand that we live in a world which consists of approximately 7 billion people, all with their individual opinions and perspectives which we must respect although we may disagree with. RE is interesting, engaging and will make you think deeply about who we are and the world we live in.
