Our approach

The MFL department aims to promote a lifelong understanding and appreciation of foreign languages and cultures, aiming to nurture responsible global citizens who can successfully and confidently communicate with people from French-speaking countries. To this end, there will be an implicit cultural focus in each term. Our phonetical focus will allow pupils to read aloud, grasping the vocabulary with confidence and spontaneity. Working backwards from what will enable pupils to communicate successfully in a foreign language, the curriculum covers the grammatical points from Year 7, which allow students to converse using different time frames and moods. The thread of grammar is taught, and embedded, through a variety of topics, and alongside a range of carefully selected vocabulary, to allow pupils to discuss personal topics (such as their family, talents, and hobbies) and global topics (such as festivals abroad, climate change, and caring for the environment). Complex topics are scaffolded using sentence builders and knowledge organisers, The curriculum sequences learning in a way which supports pupils’ cumulative building of skills and knowledge through each year and key stage. The curriculum aims to be language-rich and to focus on communication skills, which necessitates a focus on in-depth learning of fewer themes which are revisited and built upon annually. For example, in each year group, the Autumn term focus is ‘Myself’, the Spring term focus is ‘Places’ and the Summer term focus is ‘Education’. This is with a view to continually revisit and build upon vocabulary and grammar in a logical and accessible way.
